What is mediation?

This is a process where parties, with the help of a third party (a qualified mediator) opt to work out and agree on arrangements pertaining issues at hand. It saves the cost and time of going through court process.

How long does a divorce take?

This will depend on the complexity of the matter for example if it is defended or undefended or how busy the court schedule is. There is therefore no specified time which a divorce can take.

Who can write a will?

Anyone with capacity can write a will, that means they must be of sound mind and have attained the age of 18 at the time of making of the will.

Can I adopt a child?

Any person who falls under the following category can adopt a child:

  • A married couple, in a joint application provided that they have been legally married for a period of at least three years.
  • A person who has married the parent of a child can adopt that child provided that the other biological parent’s consent is availed or dispensed with.
  • A relative of the child.
  • A single person may adopt a child of similar gender, and may only adopt a child of the opposite gender under special circumstances.

 

In addition to the above, the prospective adoptive parent must be at least 25years old and less than 65years old, she or he must have an age gap of at least 21years between self and the child to be adopted.
